Further Information

Description

Friedrich De Vries is a fastidious, but adventurous scholar of a Malkavian. He was one of the first pioneers in the field of Psychoceramics, which he taught to his lineage. Like Indiana Jones of movie fame, he travels the world in search of new discoveries, and he also hates Nazis. Because of this, his social duties, which he abhors (though he will only admit this in private) are usually left in the capable hands of his assistant, Agatha Palmerstone. Because of his Arcane nature and mysterious vibes, people seem to forget about him except in the most vague and mystifying ways.

Lineage:

  • Friedrich De Vries
    • Josiah S. Carberry
      • Truman Grayson (Ghoul)
    • Jean-Baptiste Botul
Timeline

1662 - De Vries is born in Amsterdam.
1696 - De Vries, a professor of Materials Science and Comparative Literature, develops the field of Psychoceramics into a robust study.
1708 - De Vries is Embraced without permission. His sire is executed, but De Vries is allowed to live, but banished from the city for 100 years.
1708- 1890 - De Vries wanders through Europe, travelling from university to university, library to library. His nomadic lifestyle, and his seemingly endless thirst for both knowledge and sexual conquest of Nosferatu ladies make him somewhat famous, if mildly scandalous among the Kindred of the day.
1891 - 1940 - De Vries travels the world to try to make what he calls "Meaningful Discoveries in the world of Cracked Pots." Although his first stop is in Crete, he soon makes his way to almost every continent, for a time.
1922 - He Embraces one of his students, Josiah S. Carberry of Brown University. Soon Carberry develops a reputation for missing lectures due to being nocturnal. Carberry nonetheless eventually becomes a professor, with a reputation for missing his own lectures.
1941 - De Vries moves to France to join the Resistance movement against the Nazis. What he discovers during the next few years scars his mind even more than it already was.
1943 - Meets up with the Melamed family, aiding them in the fighting in Warsaw and other parts of Eastern Europe.
1944 - Gives a small broken ceramic jug to Nadzieja, a small child in Warsaw.
1955 - Moves to NYC in the United States, but never stays for very long, his wanderlust and thirst for discovery taking over after a while.
1970s - Is a frequent visitor to Jolene and Agatha's nightclub, often lamenting the lack of Nosferatu companions there.
1990s - early 2000s - helps drive the Sabbat out of NYC
2011 - Everyone is shocked when he is not Beckoned, most of all himself.
2012 - Becomes the Malkavian Primogen of NYC when Virgil Vendicimo takes over the Praxis.

Quotes

  • Dulce et Decorum Est Desipere in Loco - the motto of De Vries and his lineage. According to him, it translates as "It is pleasant and proper to be foolish once in a while".
    • Editor's note: The Latin word loco actually means "place (n.)", not "foolish (adj.)"; this is presumably the product of a false etymology of the Spanish word loco, which itself properly means not "foolish" but "crazy". It is unclear whether this error was intentional on either level.
  • "The Nomadic Master of Psychoceramics. It is truly a privilege to serve in his stead when he goes on his little adventures." - Agatha Palmerstone
