Bio

Maria Josefina Vasquez de los Santos was born in a farming community about 20 miles from Havana, Cuba in 1850 to a very large family of farm workers. She was known as a hard worker even as a young girl, but aspired to more than her meager farm life had to offer. She grew interested in not just the teachings of her local Catholic Church, but also the local brujeria and folk magic, lucky amulets, miraculous medals, and rituals to ward off the evil eye. These all offered her a break from her life of poverty and toil, and an aspiration of something better for her someday.

At the same time, she had a growing interest in a young man in the village- the handsome Rigoberto. She found herself unsure of how to approach him, but decided to hedge her bets and began to anonymously leave him avocados on his windowsill in the dead of night. She started to leave short, simple notes with the avocadoes, and he began to offer her oranges in return, in equal secrecy. They would often sneak out at night, lest gossip be spread. But one day, Rigo seemed to have vanished. Nobody knew where he went. Josefina kept leaving the avocadoes on his windowsill, in hope he would return, but the fruit would just rot, night after night. Then, one night, Josefina woke up to a familiar rustling and tiptoed to the windowsill, finding a familiar orange there, holding down a note that said "meet me by the fig tree."

She snuck out and went to the fig tree, where she saw a shadowy, familiar figure- her Rigoberto! Eexcept he was different. He was cold and cloaked in shadow. "Do you really want to be with me?" She told him that she did, and she was certain, even when he said that she would have to leave her whole life behind. He told her that he was offering her what he never had: a choice. She accepted his offer and was Embraced.

He was turned into a shovelhead to fight in the second Sabbat war, and the only thing that could make it more bearable was having his love, Josefina, fight by his side. Josefina's brutal fighting helped her survive that war, but Rigo was not as lucky. Her efforts caught the attention of the Cardinal of Havana, who a few decades later approached her about joining the Black Hand.

Upon being inducted, she took the new name, Azabache, after a traditional black jet stone used to ward off the evil eye, often carved in the shape of a fist or hand. She was deployed to assassinate targets that often had higher amounts of security surrounding them, being able to blend into the shadows and quickly take out the targets.

In 1952, sensing the waning of the Catholic Church’s influence on the island nation of Cuba, many Lasombra fled to either Mexico or the United States. Azabache was one of these- fortunately just in time for her to fight the Giovanni in Atlantic City. This time, she was felled in battle, and found herself in torpor, buried deep within the Pine Barrens… until it was discovered that she was alive. Effort was made to find her blood that could awaken her, and just a few months ago, she was able to be brought back to health and re-adjust to her powers. After awakening, she found herself plagued by nightmares and visions, which were unrelenting while she lay in torpor: Visions of a Gehenna that must be avoided at any cost.
