- 1930, not wanting to follow into the family business(father was a shipwright) opted to join the Canadian military.
- Found an aptitude for fixing things, ended up as an officer in the signal corp.( radio operations)
- 1939, was part of the first Canadian division deployed for World War two.
- Set up radio communications all throughout allied territories and the Italian front.
- 1945, was heavily involved in Allied operations named Manna, Chowhound and Faust. Getting food and medical supplies into occupied Netherlands.
- was a crewmember on the first relief bomber( named bad penny) realized he hated flying.
