Bio

"Time is a flat circle.”~ Friedrich Nietzsche

Heard that a while ago and it’s always stuck with me a bit. My story as it goes makes me believe it holds more truth than I would like. Seeing the same things come and go enough that it leaves a certain viewpoint on the now. I was born back in 1841, near the time Nietzsche entered this world. My family farmed shade grown tobacco, and had come over from Scotland, England, Wales seeking a better life. I grew up on the farm trying to live as a good son, and brother. As I grew older, I knew I wanted to make my own way in the world, leave my own mark. My Brother and Sister could inherit the farm. The first chance to forge my own path came in the War of the Rebellion.

1861 I was a man grown for that time. I enlisted in the 14th Connecticut Infantry. See I always held that no person should own another and while I had no desire to kill the fact those on the opposite side looked to throw us to chaos to protect that right made it a little easier. War teaches us that Hell is not some place in fantasy, or some other dimension. It is the creation of us in our worst. For me the first glimpse of Hell was what some refer to as “Pickett’s Charge” at the Battle of Gettysburg. Waves of men fighting to enslave others charged like demons from Hell. Again and again, we beat back those forces with ball and charge then with bayonet and hands. At the end of the day the traitors were beaten, and the end of the War was in sight.

Returning home, I had seen things and done things that felt like I needed to be cleansed. The cradle that raised me the farm and family needed to be kept innocent. I went West to make my fortune and find my path. That untamed country I hoped could cleanse my soul and find my way.

It was on the path West I met my Angel. I was newly into the Montana Territory, and I had started to make my claim and get my cattle ranch running. I also knew I was handy with the steel and had made some money as a lawman. Her family was a little more established, but when I had stepped in and stopped her brother from getting beaten and shot due to some gambling debts I was able to Court then marry her. Together we made a life raised three children. There were trepidations times. Sometimes people come looking for trouble, but those that look for trouble tend to lose when they run into someone ready for it. I was more than ready for it.

People like to think now the West was won by those who had the quickest draw or shot the best. It wasn’t that way. It was won by those with the strongest wills. Those who when you looked into their eyes you knew they were not to be trifled with. Overall, my goal was to be fair and just in application of the law, and in my business, I find they both served me well. Generally, I was the man who they turned to when things went bad. I set those things right, then would return to the ranch.

In our life together we raised two boys and one girl. We lived a happy and fulfilled life. One of my Boys grew into Lawman, the other took over the family business driving and raising cattle. My little girl decided to go back East once she was grown and then married and raised a family back East in CT. 1889 my Wife and Angel passed from this life. I was getting ready to turn the day to day over to my younger son when in 1890 the news came to us of his Brother’s Death.

It came quick via telegraph. Being a former lawman, they wanted me to know quick as possible. I went out that night and arrived in town near dusk the next day. I entered the town and they had my Boy propped up in a coffin in the center of town. There was a sign “This is what happens when the Bell gang is crossed”

Anger and rage boiled within me. I asked around investigating, making sure I knew who was responsible. It didn’t take long this was a new silver boom town. Turns out my Son had arrested a member of this gang and they ambushed him. They had taken up residence in the local hotel which was also the local saloon and were celebrating their freedom and success. I claimed the body, buried my Boy and went to the Mayor. They eagerly pinned a tin star on my chest. The Bell gang consisted of cattle thieves, petty criminals, and now murderers. I grabbed a local and gave him some cash to buy rounds in the saloon tonight but told him to leave early. I had myself a beer and whiskey, but remained sober as I heard the saloon raucous and wild. When they townsfolk had left and just the Bell gang remained, I entered. Russell Bell was the head of the Bell Gang and he and his cohort were fully ready to howl at the moon.

I could try and describe the next few moments for you, but it is still for me a blur of death and vengeance. When it ended, I simply remember the Bell Gang was no more. Most were felled from my shotgun or my six shooters, but for Russell. Him I beat to death with my bare hands. It was the one time I let my emotions get away from me when enforcing the law. I left the tin star stained with Bell blood with the mayor and went home, or at least I tried to.

It was that night my Sire found me. I hear of some other clans and their Embraces are chaotic and passionate. Mine was more akin to a business transaction. I was able to put my affairs in order, transfer my ownership and settle any debts. My children were well established, and my wife was gone. I was given an eternity to be able to make wrongs right, and to watch over my descendants.

After my long accounting that is what I did. For 25 years I learned the ways of the Kindred. Released near the start of the Great War I found my family and they had returned East as did I. There I conscripted myself to avoid my descendants fighting in the way I knew they would. The Battle of Belleau Wood was a particularly nasty spot. In WW2 I could not stop my descendants, but instead fought alongside them doing all I could to keep them from harm.

Returning to the States I tried to stay in the shadows helping to guide them to prosperity. My unlife is kept by feeding on the lawless. I developed a herd amongst them. These miscreants are lawless, but they keep the peace and keep “civilians” from harm. I in turn let them stay rather than routing them out.

When the time came to free Springfield from the Sabbat I put on the proverbial tin star in my mind and fought to free the area. The more stable the White Tower is the more stable for the Kine and my Family. As such time for me remains a flat circle, when needed I use those gifts that set me apart, and when they are not needed, I keep the peace.
